Kerber books place in a second Wimbledon final

Wimbledon Serena Williams Angelique Kerber and the champion mentality

Williams will now face Angelique Kerber in Saturday's final in a repeat of the 2016 showpiece, a match the American won in straight sets.

Will Serena match Court's record? Kerber's resilience and consistency versus Ostapenko's capricious ways, a maddening mix of brilliance and error that has shaped a career of highs and lows, of unexpected victories and even more unforeseen defeats. But unlike in the quarterfinals, when she needed seven match points to win, this time it required only two, with the match ending - fittingly enough - on a forehand by Ostapenko that sailed wide.

'She's trying to, yeah, playing like she played the years before where she won the big matches.

While Meghan attended Wimbledon two years ago as a guest of Ralph Lauren, she has not yet made an appearance in the royal box this year.

Kerber upset Williams in the 2016 Australian Open final, one of two Williams losses in her 12 Grand Slam finals since the start of 2012. And waited for the Latvian to make the mistakes, which she did.

In each set Goerges was broken in the sixth game and she simply did not have the firepower or belief to stop the seven-times champion from surging to a 20th successive win on the hallowed turf. But Kerber settled that niggle with an ace and went on to hold.

The left-handed Kerber was mainly a passive participant in the early going against Ostapenko. Williams broke for a 4-2 lead in the second when Goerges tried a rare drop shot that caught the top of the net tape and fell on her side.

Yes, this will be Serena Williams' 10th Wimbledon final.

The statistics told the story. That first game consisted of eight points: Three were unforced errors by Ostapenko, including a double-fault to begin the proceedings; the other five were winners by her, including a 100 miles per hour ace to close the hold.

The semifinal between Williams and Goerges began on a high note, marked by high quality serving and a robust exchange of ground-strokes. Goerges and Williams lead the aces count this fortnight and, for a player who suffered five first-round losses at Wimbledon before this year, must serve effectively to stand a chance today. Or, more to the point on this afternoon, how such a stinging serve and groundstrokes didn't help her avoid first-round exits each of the past five years at Wimbledon.

The second set followed a similar pattern with Goerges showing both courage and promise in the first half and then falling away a little in the next.

Leading 4-2, Williams powered into a one-set lead, breaking Goerges to love to move ahead. Her mobility is solid, her serve is incredible, and she's been taken to three sets just once all tournament.
