The teams then went back and forth in regulation, and neither could find the victor, sending the game into extra time.

Zlatko Dalic's side bossed proceedings, but found themselves trailing to a gem of a strike by Denis Cheryshev after 31 minutes, before Andrej Kramaric brought them back on level terms six minutes to the half-time break.

The score was locked at 2-2 after regulation and extra-time, with Denis Cheryshev in the 31st minute and Brazil-born Mario Fernandes in the 115th on target for Russian Federation, and Croatia temporarily leading from Andrej Kramaric in the 39th and Domagoj Vida in the 101st.

Croatia, meanwhile, came through a shootout of their own, seeing off Denmark following a nervy 1-1 draw.

The teams then traded two scores each before Ivan Rakitic calmly converted the winning penalty.

Yuri Gazinskiy became Russia's third substitutes, coming in for Dzyuba, but Croatia almost ran into trouble after making two more subs, Josip Pivaric and Mateo Kovacic on for Ivan Strinic and Kramaric.

Akinfeev was helpless as Vida's header sneaked through a body of players into the bottom-right corner of the net from a corner on the right. Assisted by Luka Modric with a cross following a corner.

Croatia were deservedly back on level terms a minute later, however, as Mandzukic ran into space on the left and delivered a telling cross for Kramaric to head past Igor Akinfeev from seven yards out. Assisted by Mario Mandzukic.

Russian Federation and Croatia have faced each other three times previously, with two of those ending goalless in qualifiers for Euro 2008; Croatia won the other meeting in November 2015, a 3-1 victory in a friendly. Denis Cheryshev (Russia) left footed shot from outside the box to the top left corner. Stanislav Cherchesov's could nearly snatched the win two minutes to the end but Subasic held on to Zobnin's long-range shot and both countries, who have now played out draws in their four competitive meetings had to find a victor via the penalty shootout.

The hosts are one of the more surprising sides to make the last eight, having shocked the world in their penalty defeat of Spain last weekend.

Russian Federation substitute Alexander Erokhin headed over the bar and Modric had a shot blocked before referee Sandro Ricci's whistle signalled the game was heading into extra-time.

"We watched the game today and saw how good they are from dead-ball situations, so will have to focus more on defending set-pieces, because we conceded towards the end today from a set-piece and we will have to improve that element of our game". Cherchesov will have to do without experienced wing-back Yuri Zhirkov who is unavailable for the game against Croatia.
