LeBron James joins Los Angeles in 4-year, $154 million contract today, leaves Cleveland Cavaliers

The 33-year-old stunned the National Basketball Association world when it was announced that he would be signing a four-year, $154 million deal with the Los Angeles Lakers.

The four-time National Basketball Association most value player informed the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday that he was not exercising his $35.6m (£26.8m) option and was becoming a free agent.

However, he had endured frustration with the Cleveland Cavaliers, culminating in last month's clean sweep defeat to the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals. Here's what's being said.

Now comes the harsh light of evaluation on those players - which ones can help win a title for the Lakers, and which ones are out.

LeBron James is leaving Cleveland again ― but not without a classy online farewell.

But after 15 years in the NBA, James didn't need much convincing nor elaborate proposals.

James isn't planning any more comments and there won't be a welcoming press conference or celebration in Los Angeles, a person familiar with his plans said Sunday night on the condition of anonymity.

They'll need to do that, as in the short-term a championship contender is not in place.

His management agency, Klutch Sports Group, announced his agreement with the Lakers with a simple, short release. That may be wasteful when Leonard reportedly wants to sign with the Lakers as a free agent in 2019. Given the make-up of the West, the Lakers probably are the conference's third- or fourth-best team and the possibility of a Kawhi Leonard trade still lingers.

Verdict: Signing LeBron does not come cheaply, but it's a slam dunk move for the Lakers, a marquee franchise that needed a marquee player.

Accomplishments: Fourteen-time All-Star, four-time most valuable player and three-time champion going into his 16th season. And while he has always been compared to Michael Jordan, Johnson is the one whose game more closely resembles his own.

And he also snubbed what could have been the most money and longest deal available, the Cavaliers being able to extend James a five-year contract worth $209 million. Paul informed the Cavs on Friday morning that the four-time MVP would not opt in to the final year of his contract; James was scheduled to make $35.6 million in 2018-19. He also led the Cavs to a championship during the 2016 season, ending a 52-year title drought for the city.
