Light's multi-lens camera tech is coming to a phone

Light says a smartphone with its multi-lens design will be announced later this year, but it will be interesting to see how those lenses affect the cost.

That's quite a lofty goal for a brand that only has working prototypes right now - with lenses numbering between five and nine - so it's a long way from ready with only six months left to go. According to the Washington Post, Light is working to bring its multiple-lens technology to smartphones. Light is reportedly claiming that the massive sensor line-up will offer 64MP photos, great depth effects and improved low light performance. "It's truly pocketable. Yet in the end, consumers want the convenience of a phone with the power of a dedicated camera", TechCrunch reported.

In our first look earlier this year, James Laird wrote: "Taken all together, the Light L16 proposes an enticing combination of DSLR-esque image quality, CSC-like portability, and the ease of use reminiscent of smartphone cameras". Huawei is offering the most on the market with three rear sensors on the Huawei P20 Pro. but how about nine? Although 16 lenses may seem excessive, the camera is able to capture multiple pictures simultaneously at different depths and focal lengths.

The camera is already some way towards being a smartphone as it runs Android and boasts built-in Wi-Fi. The smartphone's 40MP sensor is an RGB one, the 20MP one is a monochrome sensor, while the 8MP is the telephoto lens.

That's nine whole lenses on the back of the device alone.

Why so many cameras? The camera then uses algorithms to combine them into one high-resolution image. The L16 rings in at $1,950 Dollars. Of course, given this is all still in the prototype stage, and we might not actually see this kind of smartphone launch this year.
