The climber's safety was in question for hours as she played cat-and-mouse with NY police and Park Service officers trying to coax her out from among the green copper folds of the Statue of Liberty's robe.

After roughly four hours, a person who climbed to the base of the Statue of Liberty has been escorted down by police.

However, the self-styled "direct action" group said it was not connected to the woman who tried to climb the statue, despite the "Rise and Resist" T-shirt.

So police placed her in custody, Willis said, noting that the woman was facing multiple federal charges including trespassing and disorderly conduct. He said federal rules do not allow banners to hang at the monument, which is run by the park service. The statement did not say whether or not the climber was a member of their group.

Later, National Park Service police and the New York City Police Department (NYPD) were called to the scene shortly after reports of an individual climbing the monument.

There was confusion over whether she was part of a group who protested at the site against USA immigration policy. Police used ladders to get to the top of the base to try to get the climber to come down.

She reportedly refused to come down until all of the migrant children being held in detention centers were set free and reunited with their parents. "I don't think they have the right to co-opt the Statue of Liberty to do it", Willis said.

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has defended the immigration policy in terms of public safety.

Walker said the theme of the protest was that Lady Liberty is weeping over the unconstitutional excesses of ICE under the Trump administration.

The sign read, "Abolish I.C.E".

The "Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World" was a gift of friendship from the people of Franche to the United States and is recognized as "a universal symbol of freedom and democracy", according to the National Park Service.

After the sighting of the protester attempting to climb the statue, tourists were escorted back on to the mainland.
