The Justice Department tweeted earlier Friday that the deputy AG would hold a news conference with "a law enforcement announcement". "Together with our law enforcement partners, the Department of Justice is resolute in its commitment to locate, identify and seek to bring to justice anyone who interfere with American elections".

Separately, The Daily Beast reported that Mueller's team has determined that the person calling himself Guccifer 2.0, who leaked sensitive DNC documents in the months leading to the 2016 election, is a Russian intelligence officer. They are accused of a sustained cyberattack against Democratic party targets, including its campaign committee and Hillary Clinton's campaign.

Mr Rosenstein said he had briefed Mr Trump ahead of time about the development in recent days.

"There is no allegation in this indictment that any American citizen committed a crime", he said at a news conference.

Mueller has been investigating the Trump campaign's ties to Russian Federation, as well as possible obstruction of justice on the part of the president, for more than a year. The president also has said the interference took place and vowed that if it returned in the 2018 midterm election - as US intelligence officials have warned it may - he would "counteract it very strongly".

Rosenstein said at the time that the Russians had waged "information warfare" against the USA during the 2016 campaign, with the aim of "spreading distrust towards the candidates and the political system in general". It should all make for an interesting meeting of President Trump and Putin next week in Helskinki.

US intelligence agencies have concluded that Putin personally ordered a campaign to undermine "public faith in the USA democratic process" with the goal of hurting Clinton's candidacy and ultimately helping to elect Trump.

A few hours before the indictments were announced, Trump described the Mueller investigation as a "rigged witch hunt" that is hurting the USA relationship with Russian Federation.
