"We agreed to choose a date and place right after the meeting of our presidents in Helsinki to find ways for the realizations of goals which will be hopefully set at this summit".

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on July 2 that the Russian president is open to searching for compromises with Trump on all issues except the status of Ukraine's Crimea region, which Moscow claims is part of Russia.

A US congressional delegation was in Moscow on Tuesday meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Russian parliamentarians.

A group of Republican members of Congress are also in Moscow for a rare visit to hold talks with Russian lawmakers ahead of the Trump-Putin summit.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, back to a camera, listens to U.S. Sen. The two reportedly had another meeting later in the evening where the two spoke for almost an hour, with only Putin's translator present. "Indeed, we do not rule out that both Presidents Putin and Trump may have a tête-à-tête meeting at the beginning, if an initial agreement is confirmed and there is preliminary understanding".

Some have criticised Trump's approach to speaking privately with world leaders - which one former official called a "threat to national security" - and have raised concerns that discussions may get lost in translation and that no formal U.S. record may be kept. Last month, Trump exacerbated tensions with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation partners by calling for Russian Federation to be readmitted to the alliance. The two will meet alone, before being joined by their advisers for an extended.
