Serena fights back to join former slam winners in Wimbledon semis

So Bartoli decided not to hit any second serves.

Ostapenko hasn't dropped a set in her first five matches and the 12th seed said: "I'm just enjoying being here".

Whereas Rodina seemed overawed by facing Williams on Centre Court in the fourth round, such nerves were not apparent in Giorgi, who benefited from a poor line call to go a break up. Why not take a risk?

There were no signs of stage-fright from Giorgi in her first Grand Slam quarter-final as she took the first set. Williams has more wins in a major after losing a first set (39) than any other player in the women's Open era (Chris Evert has 28 and Venus Williams has 27).

Williams missed last year's Wimbledon as she was pregnant with her first child. "It's really hard to [compete] with a hero".

Williams advanced with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Camila Giorgi of Italy.

Giorgi was excellent off both wings in the opener and won her first set in four meetings with Williams as a brilliant backhand gave her two set points and an errant forehand followed from the American.

Williams, asked whether she's felt any pressure during this tournament, said, "This is only my fourth tournament back". "I'm like, 'I'm going as hard as I can on this one'". "You can be a mom, you can still play tennis, and you can still be great".

Goerges turned out to be an unstoppable force as she won eight of the last nine games to subdue her friend, whose lunging effort on match point rolled into the bottom of the net. She then clarified this.

"Every match starts from zero", Goerges said.

Giorgi didn't back off, but the momentum shifted.

And when Williams took the court for the second set, she did indeed look calm and composed - and roared back with a vengeance.

The 26-year-old faces German 13th seed Julia Goerges or Croatian world number 55 Donna Vekic on Tuesday. "We are here in the semis and they are all tough opponents and you have to play at your best", Kerber said.

Her dance of delight signalled the end of Giorgi's threat as Williams raced to the finish line.

It was Serena's 100th career main draw victory on grass. After the first set, I just said, let's go three sets. ". I would try to go around her more, rather than through her".

After seven minutes, the decision was finally changed and the point replayed.
