Spain break World Cup passing record

Russia's defender Ilja Kutepov vies with Spain's midfielder Isco during their 2018 World Cup round of 16 match at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow

Sunday could mark the end of the World Cup host's run-or the biggest surprise we've seen yet in Russian Federation.

Isco's free-kick from deep on the right saw Ignashevich grappling with Ramos at the back post, the ball inadvertently bouncing past Akinfeev off the veteran defender's heel, although Spain's captain tried to claim the goal.

Spain's Koke fails to score by penalty kick during the round of 16 match against Russian Federation in Moscow on July 1, 2018.

They looked, however, equally toothless up front, with Aleksandr Golovin's curled effort their only noteworthy opportunity until Gerard Pique's handball gave them a chance to level with a penalty in the 42 minute.

The first half of extra time was dominated by Spain again, with Isco at the forefront of the attacks but still unable to generate any clear cut opportunities.

Caretaker manager Fernando Hierro's decision to add the workmanlike qualities of Koke and Marcos Asensio over the inventive brilliance of Andres Iniesta and Thiago Alcantara in the midfield defied logic, and Spain finally paid a heavy price for it. Sergei Ignashevich scored his moments later, and the score remained 2-2.

Russia's Igor Akinfeev saves a penalty from Spain's Koke during the shootout.

The responsibility then fell on Ramos' shoulders and he delivered, rifling his penalty in the net.

Spain controlled the game as expected but struggled to create genuine chances, with Akinfeev sharp on the few occasions they did before saving from Koke and Iago Aspas to seal a 4-3 win on penalties.

Russia's first win over Spain since the breakup of the Soviet Union books the hosts a place in the quarter-finals, where either Denmark or Croatia await.

Akinfeev claimed Pique's header and pushed away a Rodrigo Moreno shot in extra-time, while the introduction of Aleksandr Erokhin as Russia's fourth substitute made World Cup history.

Russian Federation endured a tense wait when Kuipers was in communication with the video assistant referee following a late tug on Pique in the box, before Akinfeev's shootout heroics clinched an unforgettable triumph.
