Suspected poachers killed by pride of lions on South African game reserve

More than one alleged poacher thought to be killed by lions

Staff at the Sibuya Game Reserve in Kenton-on-Sea, South Africa discovered the men's bloody remains on Tuesday, including dismembered limbs and a decapitated head.

An anti-poaching dog alerted her handler on Monday morning that "something was amiss", but the handler was not concerned because it is not unusual to hear lions at night, Fox wrote in the Facebook post.

The alleged poachers allegedly brought a high-powered rifle with a silencer, wire cutters, an axe for cutting out the rhino horns, and food to last for several days.

Fox said park rangers immediately contacted South African police and the region's anti-poaching unit.

"They were obviously poachers", said Fox.

The 30 square mile park is home to all of Africa's "Big Five" - rhinos, lions, elephants, buffalos, and leopards.

Local police forensic teams, assisted by Sibuya's Anti-poaching unit, are continuing the investigation with the aim to identify the bodies' remains. Officials had to tranquilize six lions so they could obtain the remains and items on the scene, police told BBC.

In 2016, the reserve saw three of its rhinos shot dead by poachers who broke into the reserve to cut off their horns. "They used the rifle to shoot the animal and the axe to remove the horn", he added.

Trading of rhino horn is widely banned by worldwide and national authorities, though a court ruling in South Africa last year favor of breeders last year has legalized a domestic market for the horns.

Staff at the Sibuya Game Reserve, in Eastern Province, South Africa, called in a helicopter to search the area for more poachers.

However, this time the hunters became the hunted, when they got in the way of the resident lion pride. Despite the fact that rhino horn's virility-boosting and medicinal effects are a myth, powdered horn sells for up to $100,000 per kilogram in Vietnam, worth more than its weight in gold. The dog heard something and attempted to alert its handler, who brushed it off as the usual sound lions make.
