That knocked Switzerland out of the tournament and keeps Sweden's World Cup dreams alive.

The first meeting between the nations at a major tournament simmered for 65 minutes in St Petersburg until Forsberg's fortunate strike handed Sweden a crucial lead.

Referee Damir Skomina initially gave a penalty deep into stoppage time before VAR intervened, though the change of decision made no difference to the final outcome of the contest.

Sweden, who will face either England or Colombia in the last eight, created more chances than their more refined but disappointing opponents and could have won more easily but for some wayward finishing.

In contrast, Switzerland's run in Russian Federation came to a rather subdued end.

Switzerland are without first-choice defenders Fabian Schar and captain Stephan Lichtsteiner - as both are suspended with one game bans.

Shy and understated, the 26-year-old Forsberg couldn't be more different than the larger-than-life Ibrahimovic, who ruled the Sweden team for more than a decade and was the greatest player the country ever produced.

After a slow start, and Lustig's foul on Josip Drmic, Switzerland grew in confidence and should have scored when Blerim Dzemaili snatched at Steven Zuber's pull-back.

Yet Vladimir Petkovic's side - who had scored four of their five goals in Russian Federation after the interval - continued to struggle, only waking from their slumber after falling behind.

Sommer saved Ola Toivonen's effort, and the game ended seconds later.

Switzerland twice went close to grabbing an equaliser, as Djourou's header dribbled agonisingly across the goal-line and substitute Haris Seferovic drew a late save from close range.

- This was only Switzerland's fourth defeat in their last 15 matches at the previous four World Cup tournaments, with three of those defeats coming by a 1-0 scoreline.

When Forsberg did score, in the 66th minute, his goal was a hugely deserved one.

Marcus Berg had a wonderful opportunity to open the scoring for Sweden in the eighth minute after going through inside the box but he rushed his shot and failed to hit the target.

Sweden's goalkeeper Robin Olsen (left) and midfielder Emil Forsberg defend their goal during their 2018 World Cup round of 16 match against Switzerland at the Saint Petersburg Stadium in Saint Petersburg on July 3, 2018.
