Costa Rica, already eliminated, equalised in injury time, as Bryan Ruiz's penalty hit the bar and then bounced in off Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer's head for an own goal.

Brazil won 2:0 against Serbia in the other final Group E match.

"The most important thing is that we've made it past the group stage".

Switzerland's attentions now turn to their crunch clash with Janne Andersson's side, while Costa Rica are left to reflect on a campaign that fell well short of their magical run to the quarter-finals in 2014.

Swiss captain Lichtsteiner and his defensive partner Schar both collected a second caution of the tournament in the 2-2 draw at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium and miss Tuesday's match in St Petersburg in a blow to Swiss hopes.

Costa Rica started with a freedom that was missing from their first two games, carving out a number of excellent opportunities in the early stages.

Efforts from Blerim Dzemaili and Josip Drmic were cancelled out by Kendall Waston and a late own-goal from Yann Sommer as Die Nati finished runners-up in Group F behind Brazil to march on in Russian Federation.

Navas was called into action shortly after, blocking Embolo's acute effort at his near post, before Waston deservedly pulled Costa Rica level after 56 minutes.

Kendall Waston was thrilled to make his mark at "the best football party in the world" after scoring for Costa Rica in their 2-2 draw with Switzerland. Ruiz stepped up to score his 25th worldwide goal, but he struck the woodwork and it bounced into the net off Sommer. They came twice from behind against Switzerland and you could see how much their goals and the result meant to them and their fans by the reaction around the ground and on the bench.

The player added that this year's World Cup was full of surprises and Switzerland could be one of the dark horses of the tournament.

Costa Rica were not done, though, and were awarded another penalty when Denis Zakaria fouled Joel Campbell - and this time it stood.

The team of Vladimir Petkovic taking into account the probable defeat of Serbia from Brazil (as happened) it was enough not to lose to Costa Rica.

And Ruiz was then denied the chance to end his worldwide career with a goal as his spot-kick flew in off Sommer's bonce.
