An opportunity to dive into the round with two legends is something not regularly afforded a normal PGA Tour viewer. And now, they're planning a live-television, winner-take-all match-play face-off.

And also, it's for $10 million.

Woods and Mickelson have been through everything in golf, if not together, at least adjacent. Negotiations were well underway by the time the two were paired together at The Players Championship.

Woods seemed amenable: "I'm definitely not against that. We'll play for whatever makes him uncomfortable".

In fact, the match nearly took place July 3, Mickelson said, but the details couldn't be worked out in time.

"We're working on a different date", the 48-year-old Mickelson was reported to have said Thursday. "I thought it was done for the third but obviously it wasn't", he said.

With Mickelson's first win for five years earlier this season and Woods' resurgence from multiple back surgeries, the hype went into overdrive. Considering these are two of the tour's most notorious trash talkers and they are playing for an astounding amount of money, expect some heated reactions. Coming to a TV near you. soon.

"We're at the tail end of our careers [and] we both know that".

As part of those, a Ryder Cup committee evolved, and its two permanent members are Woods and Mickelson. The made-for-tv match would, ideally, be a prime-time, match play showdown to be staged some time this year.

Woods ranks 16th on the 2018 Forbes magazine list of the world's top moneymaker athletes with $43.3 million, topping all golfers, with Mickelson six spots lower overall and second among golfers at $41.3 million.

Woods' reps, meanwhile, declined comment. He recently finished tied for fourth at the Quicken Loans National.

The build started, publicly at least, at this year's PLAYERS Championship.

At a Players news conference, Mickelson proposed that the two simply play each other without anyone else on the course. This could be the ultimate bragging right.

Mickelson added of the stakes: "It's a ridiculous amount of money".
