It will be Hsieh's first appearance in the last 16 at Wimbledon where she will face Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia.

Women's top seed Simona Halep crashed out in the third round of Wimbledon on Saturday when she was beaten 3-6 6-4 7-5 by Taiwan's Hsieh Su-wei.

Halep, who ended her wait for a major title last month at the French Open, won the first set, had the chance to serve out for the victory and earned match point on her opponent's serve.

Gulbis, a former world number 10 who famously defeated Roger Federer on his way to the French Open semi-finals in 2014, will be playing in the last 16 at Wimbledon for the first time at the 11th attempt.

Halep battled with her own game as well as the crafty spins and tactics of her 48th-ranked opponent but still looked like emerging as the victor when she led 5-2 in the third set.

Halep broke back with a pummeling forehand for 3-3 but dropped serve again at 4-4 when she netted at the end of a baseline duel and Hsieh then calmly held serve to take the contest into a decider.

As for the two last lopsided sets, Tiafoe said he "gave everything I was able to do".

Third seed Muguruza joined second seed Caroline Wozniacki, fourth seed Sloane Stephens, fifth seed Elina Svitolina, sixth seed Caroline Garcia and eighth seed Petra Kvitova on the way out, along with five-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova.

"This year I have tried to enjoy more, not just tennis but life, food, strawberries and cream, lobster. I had match point", Halep said. "That's what I think".

"I just believe that I was not very positive on court".

Simona Halep's defeat means there is only one top ten women's seed remaining.

Her unique style of play drove Halep to distraction as Hsieh unfurled a series of drop-shots, delicate slices and seemingly innocuous ground-strokes.

Bencic will line up against No. 11 seed Angie Kerber, who was at her machine-best downing No. 18 Naomi Osaka 6-2, 6-4.

"I am really enjoying playing tennis, I just feel free on the court", Hsieh said following the match, which lasted two hours and 20 minutes. I will not find excuses about this match, she deserved to win.

Also upsetting the seeded agenda were Belarus' Aliaksandra Sasnovich topping No. 26 Daria Gavrilova 6-3, 6-1, Swiss Belinda Bencic beating up No. 27 Carla Suarez Navarro 6-1, 7-6 (3), and Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck powering past No. 28 Anett Kontaveit 6-2, 6-3.

In that moment, Hsieh thought back to a fourth-round match against Lucie Safarova at Nottingham previous year, which she lost in a third-set tiebreak.
