Tropical Depression Two forms in Atlantic, could dissipate before impacting Florida

New predictions for hurricanes, storms in the Caribbean this season

NOAA's National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida issued a Tropical Weather Outlook Update at 5 a.m. EDT on Friday, July 6, 2018, after Tropical Storm Beryl strengthened into Hurricane Beryl over the tropical Atlantic Ocean.

Tropical Depression Two (TD2) formed in the central Tropical Atlantic this morning.

"Beryl is forecast to degenerate into an open trough just east of the Lesser Antilles over the weekend".

There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

Beryl can bring squally showers and thunderstorms to the Lesser Antilles on Sunday and Sunday night into Monday with the potential for 1-2 inches of rainfall with locally up to 3 inches possible. Maximum winds are 35 miles per hour as it spins over the central Atlantic.

Beryl is due to reach that zone sometime late Sunday or early Monday, the hurricane center said, then later Monday head south of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, whipping the island with minimal tropical storm-force winds as it continues to weaken.

Still, the little swirl gained enough wind speed on Thursday to acquire the name Beryl.

Another system, dubbed Invest 96L, now centered southwest of Bermuda has a medium chance of developing into a tropical depression by the end of this week, according to the NHC. The area denoted in yellow east of the Caribbean Sea shows a concentrated area of t-storms associated with a small low pressure center.

Tropical Depression Two had winds of 35 miles per hour.

The official forecast from the NHC has the storm moving west to west-northwest over the next five days.

Forecast models suggests Beryl could reach hurricane strength within 36 hours, but after that time increasing westerly shear is expected to cause weakening.

There is a strong tropical wave in the far east Atlantic. Colorado State forecasters Philip Klotzbach and Michael Bell expect there will 10 named storms in the 2018 season that began on June 1, below average for the period.

A tropical disturbance between west Africa and the Lesser Antilles may become a tropical depression today, one of two systems behind monitored, neither of them likely to pose a significant threat to land in the days ahead.
