Tropical Storm Chris to strengthen; Beryl weakens to remnants

Tropical Storm Chris to bring showers

Chris formed off the coast of North Carolina on Friday and is now about 160 miles off the coast of Cape Hatteras.

While Chris is expected to become a hurricane, it will stay offshore and head to sea, according to the storm center.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles from the center. It was centered 60 miles (95 kilometers) east of Martinique and was racing west-northwestward at 26 mph (43 kph).

Canada's national forecaster says the Maritimes could be in the path of a tropical storm that formed off the USA coast Sunday morning. Maximum sustained winds have reached 45 miles per hour (75 kph). As a result, it is forecast to continue generating life-threatening waves and rip currents for the Mid-Atlantic beaches. Some pockets of moderate to heavy showers and occasional gusty winds are still possible however, with rainfall accumulations of 25 - 50mm (1 to 2inches) with isolated higher amounts. The hurricane center said the storm was expected to generate swells that would increase in intensity along the North Carolina and mid-Atlantic coasts.

The storm was expected to move toward the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, or just south of those areas, on Monday. Beryl has weakened significantly, meteorologists said, and tropical storm watches have been lifted for Martinique, St. Martin, St. Barthelemy, Saba, St. Maarten and St. Eustatius.

It is said Beryl will "degenerate into a trough of low pressure" as it moves into the eastern caribbean sea by Monday.

The tropical storm, which was named Sunday morning, is expected to continue gaining strength as it hovers over the Gulf stream's warm waters in the Atlantic Ocean, AccuWeather.com reports.

Puerto Rico, which was devastated by Hurricane Maria in September, remains under a state of emergency.
