Trump nominates Brett Kavanaugh to the US Supreme Court

President Trump shakes hands with Judge Brett Kavanaugh his Supreme Court nominee, in the East Room of the White House on Monday night.

Mr. Trump stressed the 53-year-old Judge Kavanaugh's legal credentials Monday evening, and well he should.

"He's a brilliant jurist with a clear and effective writing style, universally regarded as one of the finest and sharpest legal minds of our time".

Support for nomination: Barrett also served as a law clerk to the late Justice Antonin Scalia, who is beloved by conservatives. If approved by the Senate, he would become the fifth conservative justice on the nation's highest court. Some conservative activists have questioned whether he would rule sufficiently aggressively as a justice.

An avid runner, Kavanaugh lists his two Boston Marathon finishes on his court website biography: 3:59:45 in 2010 and 4:08:36 in 2015.

The source told Reuters that Amy Coney Barrett of IN, a Trump-appointed judge on the Chicago-based 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, was still IN contention but that the Republican president had been asking more questions about the other two, who have more extensive judicial records. "A judge must be independent, and must interpret the law, not make the law".

The president can move the court firmly to the right with his selection, with the four finalists believed to be four appeals court judges: Brett Kavanaugh, Raymond Kethledge, Amy Coney Barrett, and Thomas Hardiman. His confirmation for that post was stalled for almost three years due to allegations by Democrats that he was too partisan.

But his work on President Bill Clinton's impeachment, his close ties to President George W. Bush and his ruling on President Barack Obama's health care law, which he opposed on procedural rather than broader legal grounds, have raised concerns among some conservatives. Drawing on his experience working on the Clinton investigation and then in the Bush White House, he wrote in a 2009 law review article that he favored exempting presidents from facing both civil suits and criminal investigations, including indictment, while in office.

This is Mr Trump's second appointment to the highest court in the land, potentially allowing him to shape the U.S. for a generation after he leaves office.

McConnell reportedly told Trump that Kavanaugh, a former assistant and staff secretary to former President George W. Bush, has an extensive paper trail that could help Democrats prolong the nomination process.

"He's the opposite of a Georgetown cocktail party guy", Walker said, adding he's more of the "drink a beer and watch a hockey game" crowd.

Kavanaugh is likely to be more conservative than Justice Kennedy on a range of social issues.

Kennedy, 81, announced on June 27 plans to retire after three decades on the court, effective on July 31. Senate Republicans hold only a 51-49 majority, leaving them hardly any margin if Democrats hold the line.

Still, Senator Roy Blunt of Missouri, a member of the Republican leadership, said on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday that the Senate "can confirm any of the four names being mentioned".

Once the president made his announcement, Senator Elizabeth Warren, D-Massachusetts took to Twitter to voice her dissent saying she'll "vote no" and "it's time to fight" because the nomination requires a Senate majority vote.

Democrats have turned their attention to pressuring two Republicans, Sens. As an outsider candidate, people wanted to know who he might put on the Supreme Court, particularly since there was an open seat on the court for the next president to fill, which is rare. That decision was later overturned. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said the Senate will vote on the court nominee in the fall.

Each choice represented a shift to the right compared to Kennedy, who has often cast a swing vote between conservatives and liberals on the nine-member bench.

Kavanaugh's family was present when Trump made the announcement. Trump pledged in 2016 that he would be "putting pro-life justices on the court".

He has joined with Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer and Samuel Alito to serve as judges in mock trials to benefit the Shakespeare Theatre Company. Fellow liberal Stephen Breyer turns 80 next month. "The norms of Supreme Court confirmations have been degrading for some time".
