It's a similar playbook to one the group followed previous year with Judge Neil Gorsuch.

Trump past year appointed Neil Gorsuch, who has already become one of the most conservative justices, after Senate Republicans in 2016 refused to consider Democratic former President Barack Obama's nominee Merrick Garland to fill a vacancy left by the death of conservative Justice Antonin Scalia.

President Trump wants YOU for SCOTUS - if you're one of these two judges.

While Trump didn't name the four, top contenders for the role have included federal appeals judges Brett Kavanaugh, Raymond Kethledge, Amy Coney Barrett and Thomas Hardiman. Although the statement is undoubtedly accurate, it is likely to be seized on by supporters of abortion rights as they try to convince moderate Republican senators that Barrett might vote to overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision declaring a woman's constitutional right to abortion. Previous lobbying efforts by McConnell - including a push for fellow Kentuckian 6th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Amul Thapar, who would have been the court's first Asian-American nominee - have failed.

The rollout will be modeled on the seamless presentation in January 2017 of the President's first Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch, in what was undeniably one of his most successful and most well-managed moments as President.

One Democrat up for re-election, Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, announced Monday he would oppose any nominee from Trump's list of 25 possible candidates, drafted by conservative groups.

Kavanaugh is a former clerk to Anthony Kennedy, and was the principle author of the Ken Starr report on Bill Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky.

Given GOP control of the Senate and the chamber's Republican leader Mitch McConnell's abolition of the filibuster for Supreme Court nominations during the Gorsuch confirmation saga, any of the four is expected to have a strong chance of confirmation. The New York Times reports she says she would like to see the scope of abortion rights changed. Democratic Sen. Doug Jones of Alabama faces reelection in 2020.

"Maybe a handful of Democrats will vote for a Trump pick because they have to politically", Graham said.

Later in the week, the president also suggested that of the four reported shortlisted candidates, he had preferences, telling reporters: "I think I have it down to four people".

A source familiar with the process said Trump has made his choice.

The campaign is set to launch "as soon as the nominee is announced", according to Judicial Crisis Network. The selection has been described in the national media as monumental in cementing a conservative majority on the Supreme Court for a generation.
