But the Press Association understands that Mr Davis, who signed up to the plan agreed by the Cabinet at Chequers on Friday, has now quit.

His resignation seemed to spur others to follow suit, with a source saying that a junior minister in the same department had also quit, just two days after May had held a crisis meeting with ministers to overcome the deep divisions over Brexit.

Brexit Secretary David Davis has resigned because he was not willing to be "a reluctant conscript" to Prime Minister Theresa May's plans to leave the European Union, delivering a blow to a British leader struggling to end divisions among her ministers.

UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson.

He took on the most senior ministerial role in the newly created Department for Exiting the European Union, and was tasked with negotiating an exit deal with Brussels and a future relationship with the bloc. It was reported that the former prime minister David Cameron had been drafted in before the meeting to urge him not to resign.

Davis said the plan would "make the supposed control by Parliament illusory rather than real".

She will tell MPs it was "the Brexit that is in our national interest" and "will deliver on the democratic decision of the British people".

"Those of us who believe that we want to execute a proper Brexit, and one that is the best deal for Britain, have an opportunity now to get behind the prime minister in order to negotiate that deal", he said. But Mr Wilson, a fervent Brexiteer, did however add: "It is important that our ability to strike trade deals across the growing parts of the world's economy is not impaired and we are able to take an independent stance in those institutions which deal with liberalising trade".

Letters calling for a leadership contest have reportedly been submitted to the backbench 1922 Committee.

"Obviously if the Government and the Prime Minister continue to support that very poor offer then I won't have any confidence in the Government or the Prime Minister", Mr Bridgen said.

The veteran Tory eurosceptic Bill Cash told Sky News: "There are a lot of questions in here, there is a lot of unhappiness, there is a great deal of concern that we are saying that we leave - it's not "to be or not to be", it's "to leave or not to leave".

Peter Bone welcomed Mr Davis' resignation, saying it was "a principled and courageous decision".

Jacob Rees-Mogg, the leader of a group of Brexit supporters in the Conservative Party, said Davis' resignation proved that their concerns were well-founded.

"If the proposals are as they now appear, I will vote against them and others may well do the same", he said writing in the "Daily Telegraph".

In an interview with The Sunday Times Mrs May said: "The only challenge that needs to be made now is to the European Union to get serious about this, to come round the table and discuss it with us".
