"Then the elimination of sanctions, aid by South Korea and Japan and others can all begin to flower".

The intelligence assessment, which had not previously been reported, seemed to counter the sentiments expressed by US President Donald Trump, who tweeted after his June 12 summit with Kim in Singapore that there was no longer a nuclear threat from North Korea, NBC said.

North Korea has no intention of giving up its entire nuclear stockpile and is instead mulling ways to "conceal" its weapons from the United States, The Washington Post reported on Saturday.

"North Korea remains free to manufacture more nuclear weapons, ballistic missiles and other weapons of mass destruction - even though it has unilaterally frozen testing of its nuclear weapons and certain ballistic missiles", he said.

"Donald Trump said two weeks ago 'the north Korean nuclear threat is over".

Bolton also said on "Face the Nation" that during the US-North Korea summit in Singapore, Kim was "very emphatic several times" about turning over the arsenal, which was a change from previous regimes.

"It would be physically possible to dismantle the bulk of North Korea's programs within a year", said Thomas Countryman, the State Department's top arms control officer under President Barack Obama.

The White House declined to comment on the report.

A United States official told The Associated Press that the Post's report was accurate and that the assessment reflected the consistent view across USA government agencies for the past several weeks.

The report said the facility, located in the city of Hamnhung, makes solid-fuel and missiles that can hit U.S. military bases in Asia, and equipment for warheads that could be used to strike American soil.

North Korea continued to expand one of its missile plants during the weeks leading up its summit with the US last month, according to an analysis of satellite imagery by researchers in the U.S. "The last best chance to avoid that war is a peaceful end to their nuclear program ... if they don't take it, and they play Trump like they've played everybody else, they're going to regret it".

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said he plans to meet with Kim to "flesh out" details of the nuclear disarmament promise, but has insisted the North Korean leader is serious.

"If they have the strategic decision already made to do that, and they're cooperative we can move very quickly", he said, adding, "It's to North Korea's advantage to see these programs dismantled very quickly" to speed the elimination of worldwide sanctions and clear the way for foreign aid.

A senior U.S. intelligence official also said last week that Pyongyang was continuing to "deceive us on the number of facilities, the number of weapons, the number of missiles". "And it is to North Korea's advantage to dismantle very quickly".

"It could be that Pyongyang is calculating that no matter what, China is already off the maximum pressure campaign of sanctions against North Korea". He finally shrugged, reluctantly admitting that it "may not work out", as if it were a development deal for some hotel in Miami Beach rather than the possible annihilation of millions of people. "I really believe he means it", the president said on Fox News Channel's "Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo".
