"US Not Treated Fairly But I believe In NATO", Says Trump

Trump suggests NATO allies raise target spending to 4 percent

Says Stoltenberg: "We have agreed that we're committed to the pledge increasing defence spending to 2 percent". "NATO", he added, "is much stronger now than it was two days ago".

"We are paying for far too much of Nato", Trump said.

Sources close to the talks told DW's Teri Schultz that Trump demanded European NATO members meet the alliance target immediately, rather than increase spending gradually as agreed to at a previous NATO summit in 2014.

Over breakfast in Brussels with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg on Wednesday, President Trump lamented how the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline may leave Germany and other European countries perilously dependent on Russian Federation for its energy needs.

The leaders of the other 28 members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation alliance are hoping for a show of unity despite stark transatlantic tensions on a host of issues, most notably Trump's repeated invective against Europe over defense spending. He said the increase would happen in "a very short number of years".

Germany, Europe's richest country, spends just 1.24% on defense, and it's an unpopular topic there.

Mr Trump said the agreement to bump spending would be worth more than $US33 billion. Most NATO members are spending less than 2 percent, though more are moving in that direction.

USA officials have told Reuters that Washington is preparing another review of strategy, a year after Trump begrudgingly agreed to extend involvement in the 17-year-old war.

Though NATO allies have squabbled in the past, Trump seemed to be leaving in his wake not just bruised feelings, but deeper concerns about the future of the Western alliance that has served as a bedrock of the worldwide order.

Mr Trump refused to deny that he had threatened to pull the USA out of the organisation, but said the atmosphere in the meeting was cordial.

Mr Trump said he didn't want Russian Federation to be a threat, while adding that his meeting with Mr Putin next week "may be the easiest on his Europe trip".

Trump leaves Brussels on Thursday for some extra time with one key member of the alliance: British Prime Minister Theresa May.

"Dear America, appreciate your allies, after all you don't have that many", Tusk said, before reminding Trump that European troops had fought alongside Americans in Afghanistan following the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States. The US is paying for Europe's protection, then loses billions on Trade.

The unexpected demand from Trump during a closed-door meeting of heads of state laid down a new, virtually unachievable marker for a peacetime military spending in an alliance already struggling to meet current defense spending commitments. But that wasn't all that Trump hit allies about.
