Video shows suspect in deadly newsroom shooting being led out by police

"To the families of the victims, there are no words to express our sorrow for your loss", Trump said.

Ramos, 38, of Laurel, Maryland has been charged with five counts of murder in Thursday's shooting - one of the deadliest attacks on journalists in USA history.

McCarthy also said that Ramos was "smart enough to walk the edge so that he did not quite violate the law".

Court records show a man charged with killing five people at a Maryland newspaper was sacked from a government IT contractor because of concerns about his "suitability".

"He was distant from the family". The unidentified woman told Miller she had warned a former police official years ago that Ramos "will be your next mass shooter".

Ramos appeared in an Annapolis courtroom via video feed.

"We had given a photo to the front desk with my personal instructions that if anybody that resembled him would come through the door that they were to call 911", he said. Ramos responded "I'm not going to cooperate". She said Ramos became "fixated" on her to the point where she became frightened enough to move out of state. Ramos then sent her a series of hateful and vulgar emails, including calling her a "dirty slut", she wrote. Police say he targeted the paper, which he sued over its coverage of his 2011 conviction for harassing a former classmate.

The newspaper concluded at the time that, "the case is extreme". That touched off a yearslong tirade against the newspaper. A judge dismissed the case, so he appealed to a higher court, and was again rebuffed. It remains unclear where Ramos worked for the past four years.

The tweets on the account @EricHartleyFrnd referenced the battle against The Capital, its then-editor Thomas Marquardt and reporter Eric Hartley, who has since left the newspaper.

On a website shared by Arundel High School alumni, a person who claimed to be Ramos repeatedly posted quotes about the cost of a lost reputation and detailed the court battle between Ramos and the newspaper.

Ramos - who has a degree in computer engineering and worked for the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, according to court documents - pled guilty to criminal harassment.

Little else is known about his work history.

"A lawyer would nearly certainly have told him not to proceed with this case. I want your prayers but I want something else", San Felice said. Reporters from the newspaper shared on Twitter that they would be putting out a paper the following day, despite the tragedy.

In 2015, he tweeted that he would like to see the paper stop publishing, but "it would be nicer" to see two of its journalists "cease breathing".

For Mark Barebo, the biggest question was who. Investigators were reviewing his social media postings and searching his apartment. The woman said she hadn't written him in months.

Ramos wrote he was only told there was a "suitability" concern. Hartley and Marquardt do not now work for the paper and were not present at the time of the mass shooting.

"I guess it's a wakeup call in any community", Quina said.
