WhatsApp for iOS adds new features for group administrators

It's common to speak of Instagram, the Facebook-owned photo-app-now-social-network, borrowing from Snapchat, but now Facebook's WhatsApp chat app is increasingly drawing its innovation from others such as Telegram. Since 2017, the app has added live location sharing, the ability to export user data to follow GDPR requirements, and an option to switch from voice calls to video calls.

The rollout assumes significance in India given that many WhatsApp groups have been linked to the spread of rumours and unverified information that has also led to violence. The group then basically becomes a one-way stream, where a small number of admins can broadcast to an audience up to 256 users. The feature will be available on Android, iPhone, and Windows Phone. It will soon be enabled for the latest WhatsApp stable version for Android (2.18.191).

The new feature will enable a setting where only the admin of a group can send messages to the group. Change in settings will be notified in the group through a broadcast message. The WhatsApp has granted group admins the power to block annoying people from sending messages inside group chats. However, users can quickly contact administrators if they want an important message to be sent.

Meanwhile, a "protection" feature has also been introduced, so that users can not be repeatedly added to groups they have already left. The "Send Messages" feature is a useful addition that can remove group clutter. Messages will still appear for normal participants, but they will not be allowed to send any themselves unless they are upgraded to admin status.
