On just his seventh global appearance, Pickford became the first England stopper in 20 years to save a penalty at a major tournament.

Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois went as far as to say Pickford was too small, but Southgate was full of plaudits for the 24-year-old, who had made a fantastic save to keep out Mateus Uribe's strike prior to Mina's equaliser.

England boss Gareth Southgate reportedly faces an anxious wait over the fitness of attacking duo Dele Alli and Harry Kane ahead of the World Cup quarter-final clash against Sweden.

England had lost five successive shootouts before luck finally smiled on them at the compact Spartak Stadium. "We'll know more over the next 36 hours", he said. "I've got that power and agility to get around the goal".

"We looked at individual technique, we looked at how we needed to be as a team". Two years later, it was re-recorded with slightly different lyrics as "3 Lions 98" - and, of course, it resurfaces pretty much every time there's a footy tournament in which England are involved.

"We are getting smarter, and maybe played by the same rules as the rest of the world", Southgate said.

No matter where you were in England last night, we're betting you went to sleep with shouts from outside echoing: 'Football's coming home'. "I am proud of the discipline". "But we kept our dignity and our sportsmanship and if we were down it was because we were fouled".

Southgate also said he was not surprised by the physical approach from the South Americans. His attitude is brilliant and he's been brilliant in training and taken it into the game.

"I think we need to try to defend football and I think we should do a little more to try and prevent certain situations knowing they might arise".
