Public health officials also said an unusually high number of mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile virus on Cape Cod. The seriousness of an illness may depend on a person's health and age. One remains hospitalized. Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of antibodies to WNV.

"For the last couple of weeks we have seen a steady amplification of the virus", said Gary Goodman, manager for the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito & Vector Control District. The health department suggests using DEET and other repellents, wearing long sleeves and trousers and avoiding being outside between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active. Targeted efforts have been ongoing and reduction of mosquito populations in fogged areas is ranging from 50% to 90%. Before 2018, 134 human cases of WNV were diagnosed in CT residents including three fatalities. The horse had not been vaccinated for West Nile Virus in recent years.

About 80 per cent of people bitten by an infected mosquito don't show any symptoms at all, Miller said.

It is also advised that any standing water on the property should be tossed, such as flower pots, rain barrels, certain children's toys and wading pools, as the mosquitoes themselves like to lay their eggs in standing water, water that doesn't move or have a flow. Eliminate all sources of standing water by emptying flower pots, old auto tires, buckets and other containers.

Be particularly careful at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.

When outdoors, wear long trousers, a long-sleeved shirt and socks. Clothing material should be tightly woven. They use light traps at 17 different locations that are baited with carbon dioxide to lure the mosquitoes in. Try to avoid outdoor activities during these times.

The Town of Barnstable Public Health Division will continue to work closely with the MDPH and other agencies.

The CAES maintains a network of 91 mosquito-trapping stations in 72 municipalities throughout the state.
