A nightclub bouncer told the court Stokes ridiculed his appearance

Bristol Crown Court heard Stokes was the "main aggressor" in a fight that broke out between him and two other men - Ryan Ali and Ryan Hale - near a nightclub in the city.

The two gay men Stokes claimed he was defending, Kai Barry and William O'Connor, "thanked me for preventing them from being beaten up", the cricketer told police.

Mark Spure, off-duty police community support officer (PCSO), gave evidence on Wednesday and said he saw a group of people involved in a "scuffle" as he left Mbargo nightclub in the Clifton area of Bristol.

Mr Stokes, of Castle Eden, Durham, was arrested in the early hours along with Mr Ali, of Bristol, and Mr Hale, of Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol.

Stokes stands accused of affray alongside Ryan Hale, 27, and Ali, 28.

Cunningham said Stokes began to abuse him after he refused them entry.

The court heard that Mr. Ali allegedly threatened Alex Hales, Mr. Stokes's England teammate, with a bottle during the alleged altercation and that Mr.

The jury was also shown body-worn footage of the arrest.

Detective Constable Daniel Adams, the officer in the case, told jurors: "Ryan Ali and Kai Barry appear to be having a disagreement".

"Ali responds by pushing Barry away, albeit with no significant force", he told the jury. Ali, Spure said, was "trying to back away or move away from the situation" before the punch was thrown.

The footage then showed Stokes approaching the men as Hale is seen collapsing to the floor, before picking himself up after 20 seconds and disappearing from view before returning.

When she told him to leave Mr. Stokes, who had been placed in a police van, the court heard that Mr. He said "matters had become too serious to ignore and that I had to intervene".

The prosecution has described Barry and O'Connor as two "flamboyant, extrovert and openly gay" regulars at Mbargo. And Stokes replied: "Because he was abusing my two friends for being gay".

"It was homophobic in nature".

"In response one of the guys said 'Shut the f*** up and f**** off or I'll bottle you.' At the time he was holding a bottle in his right hand". Hales said: "I feel bad".

"I was anxious it might be two on to one and I knew one had had a bottle", Stokes told police. I was concerned for myself and others.

The trial before Judge Peter Blair QC, the Recorder of Bristol, is expected to last between five and seven days in courtroom one.
