Bond 26, which could potentially be the one to feature Elba, is expected to be released around 2022 or 2023, at which point he'd be almost 50. Apparently series producer Barbara Broccoli has been speaking to director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, The Equalizer) about the franchise, and he revealed that she said "it is time" for a non-white actor to take the role.

Tom Hardy had been mentioned, as had Michael Fassbender and Tom Hiddleston, but Elba remains the most popular choice, even if his inclusion on the shortlist is considered controversial by some people.

"Idris could do it if he was in shape", explained Fuqua. You need a guy with a physically strong presence. But one name keeps coming up: Idris Elba. He would also be 47 when Bond 26, in theory, would begin filming. In one leaked email, Amy Pascal, who was the co-chairperson of Sony Pictures Entertainment at the time, told former Columbia Pictures vice president Elizabeth Cantillon that "Idris should be the next Bond". Elba addressed the rumors with humor tweeting back in December 2014. The year prior, just ahead of when Sam Mendes released the 24th Bond film Spectre in November of 2015, Vulture cut together an insanely cool trailer that imagined Elba as a modern, take-no-prisoners Bond.

The Luther star has made the point himself, and shrugged off rumours in 2016, commenting: "I think I'm too old for that man, running around in cars and ladies and martinis, who wants to do that?" Judging from other roles he's played, the charming super-spy thing shouldn't be a problem for Elba.

He said to Vanity Fair: "It could be a woman - could be a black woman, could be a white woman".
