State Of Emergency Declared In Charlottesville For 'Unite the Right' Anniversary

"As we face this invasion of vile and perverted ideology infesting our region, we stand united in our conviction that a diverse and inclusive Maryland is a stronger Maryland", he said. "They wanted people to fight so they could deny us our First Amendment rights". The city is planning to establish a "defined security area" downtown where weapons will be banned.

On Friday night, chalk messages and flowers lined the area where Heather Heyer was killed a year ago.

As well, National Guard vehicles stormed through the streets of the college town after a Dodge Challenger was rammed through a crowd of activists in the streets driven by self-proclaimed white supremacist James Alex Fields Jr. of OH, who is now facing murder charges in Heyer's death.

Fencing and rails have been placed on Confederate monuments throughout the city. The president argued that there were "very fine people" on both sides of the rally, seemingly equating the actions of white nationalists with counter-protesters.

States of emergency were declared on Wednesday for the Commonwealth of Virginia and Charlottesville.

The Virginia state of emergency ordered by Northam will allow state agencies to quickly mobilize resources to aid local authorities, the governor's office said. Also, almost 300 members of the Virginia National Guard will be on standby. Although Charlottesville is a three-hour drive from the nation's capital, city officials and opponents of any repeat rally in Charlottesville fear that some protesters may still show up in town or in parts of Northern Virginia.

Currently, the City is planning to establish a secure, restricted-access perimeter around the Downtown Mall within the confines of High Street, Ninth Street, Ridge-McIntire Street and Water Street during the anniversary weekend, which will be implemented Friday evening at 6 p.m. and is expected to be lifted by the morning of August 13 - but could be extended if deemed necessary by public safety officials.

In the immediate aftermath, US President Donald Trump drew broad criticism when he appeared initially reluctant to condemn the extreme right-wingers - many of whom have rallied behind him since his election, including David Duke, a former KKK leader and avowed racist and anti-Semite who praised Trump's "courage" in defending white nationalist protesters.

"It was just really creepy", Reeve added.

Peter Cvjetanovic marches with white nationalists and far right extremists as they encircle the base of a Thomas Jefferson statue after marching through the University of Virginia campus with torches in Charlottesville, Va., Aug. 11, 2017.

Last year's rally came amid debate over the renaming of two parks honoring Confederate generals.

As many as 1,500 counterprotesters are expected at Lafayette Square and more at two nearby parks, setting up a possible volatile showdown that District and federal law enforcement officials say they are prepared to confront.

"Nothing would excite us any better than for this to be noneventful and folks to go home and it be a peaceful weekend for all", Settle said.
