Election for the coveted slots of Speaker, Deputy Speaker and Prime Minister will take place in the coming days. Of these, 272 are filled by direct elections.

The PTI, which secured 116 general seats in the National Assembly in the July 25 polls is the largest party in the lower house of parliament.

The PTI has still not decided about the cabinet and economic teams.

India also skipped the 2016 Saarc summit in Islamabad after a terrorist attack on an army garrison in Uri, Jammu and Kashmir, left 18 soldiers dead.

On paper, the PTI is expected to carry the day by a thin margin due to open support of several small parties but still a tough competition is expected for the top posts of speaker and prime minister. It has not announced the candidate for deputy speaker so far.

Imran Khan arrives at NA.

Pakistan's World Cup cricket hero Imran Khan will be sworn in as prime minister next week, his party said Friday, announcing it has the numbers to form a coalition government in the nuclear-armed nation.

The party is still 14 short of simple majority of 172 in the house of 342.

The newly-elected members of Pakistan's Parliament will ensure presence during the parliament session, scheduled at 10 am Pakistan time.

The PML-N, party of the jailed ex-premier Nawaz Sharif, has 82 seats in the National Assembly, followed by the PPP with 53 and the MMA with 15 seats. The two parties have made a decision to field joint candidates for posts of speaker, deputy speaker and prime minister. "We hope that Pakistan would work for a safe, secure, stable and prosperous region, free from terror and violence", the prime minister said. "We have no personal agenda but want to strengthen democracy in the country". "The opposition alliance can make an impact only if it comes up with some viable suggestions to fix the system and improve governance".
