The paper also reported that efforts were underway to find a No. 2 executive to help take some of the pressure off Musk, after his tweet drew attention from USA regulators and angered the company's board.

An employee fired from Tesla's Nevada battery factory filed a whistleblower complaint with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, accusing the company of spying on employees and failing to act after learning that a Mexican cartel may be dealing drugs inside the plant, his attorney said on Thursday.

One of the key questions Musk faced during the interview was whether he regretted his controversial decision to tweet last week about having the funding in place to take Tesla private.

Tesla Inc's shares slumped 8 percent on Friday after Chief Executive Elon Musk told the New York Times his tweet about taking the company private was not reviewed by anybody, and a brokerage raised doubts about the profitability of the electric carmaker's Model 3 sedan.

In an explosive interview with The New York Times, he said that he has had an "excruciating" year, filled with missed Tesla production targets, federal investigations, lawsuits, and 120-hour workweeks. Rather than put him to sleep, the drug has sometimes led Musk to spend his nights on Twitter, worrying some board members, the newspaper said, citing a person familiar with the board's thinking.

In the interview Musk said board members had not complained to him.

Musk told the newspaper that Tesla had several years ago approached Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg for the number-two job, but he added that there was "no active search right now".

Since then, Musk has offered follow-up explanations for the way he handled things, including an admission that he had seen his remarks as a good-faith effort to be transparent with his company's stakeholders.

Big funds speaking with Musk "are going to be getting the proverbial keys to the kingdom, and others are on the outside", Ahern said.

'This has really come at the expense of seeing my kids.

The matter stems in part from an assertion Musk made on Twitter - that he had "funding secured" for a privatization deal, and stating the price at which shareholders could unload their shares: $420 each, a roughly 20% premium over Tesla's current stock price at the time.

On Monday, the Tesla boss explained in a blog post that his much scrutinized statements about financing were based on his conversations with Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund and other investors. But I was not on weed, to be clear'.

He stood by his tweet last week saying he might take Tesla private and that he had secured the funding to do so.

Tesla was also hit with reports alleging that the company was sending workers from GA3 home early despite not meeting the day's production goal. "Weed is not helpful for productivity", he told the Times. Musk spent nights at Tesla's Fremont, California, factory working out production problems on its new Model 3 vehicle that is supposed to take Tesla from niche luxury carmaker to a mass producer that competes with Detroit.

Musk continues to have an unhealthy obsession with short sellers of Tesla's stock. "It is often a choice of no sleep or Ambien", Musk said.
