The U.S. announced its additional tariffs Tuesday.

The dispute has continued to escalate, as Trump last week threatened to jack up the tariff rate on the next $200 billion in Chinese imports his administration plans to target to 25 percent, from the planned 10 percent.

The latest charge comes after the USA said it would implement another round of tariffs on $16 billion worth of Chinese goods.

"This is a very unreasonable practice", the Chinese commerce ministry said of the US action on Wednesday as it rolled out China's counter-tariffs.

Last week, China proposed additional tariffs on another $60 billion of USA goods after Trump raised planned tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese imports to 25 percent from 10 percent.

The 279 items that will be hit with tariffs at the end of August are mostly industrial goods such as tractors, plastic tubes, and measurement equipment like speedometers.

"With each successive round of tariffs, Trump continues to back China into a corner, forcing Beijing to respond in kind", said James Zimmerman, a partner in the Beijing office of worldwide law firm Perkins Coie and a former chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in China.

Chinese data on Wednesday showed exports to the United States rose 13.3% in July to $41.5 billion against a year ago. The move comes as retaliation for the United States placing $16 billion in tariffs on Chinese goods.

It is now highly likely that China will retaliate, as promised, with its own $60 billion tariff round. While there's no major risk of the world lapsing into "damaging stagflation", the possibility remains of a "bigger blow-up" that sharply reduces trade, as in the 1930s, it said.

Negotiations broke off after the Trump administration imposed the tariffs on $34 billion in Chinese imports, a move the Chinese said would void any promises they'd made in negotiations.

President Trump had repeatedly expressed discontent over the USA trade deficit with China, accusing the country of unfair trade practices, intellectual property theft, currency manipulation, and of providing state aid to Chinese firms.

"My expectation is that U.S. tariffs on $250 billion of imports from China will be in effect about a month prior to the November U.S. elections".
