The Day After Trump Admits to Attempted Collusion, Rand Paul Invites Russian Delegation to Washington

The Kentucky Republican met with several Russian senators including Sergey Kislyak, Russia's former envoy to Washington and a key player at the heart of the election meddling scandal that continues to rock relations between the United States and Russia. While there, Paul met with a group of Russian senators, members of parliament, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov and Russian Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Konstantin Kosachev. "Nevertheless, your position in favor of developing dialogue that equally meets the interests of the United States and Russian Federation cannot but inspire respect", Kosachev said.

"I think this is incredibly important, " Paul said after the high-profile sit-down. Although the specific date of this visit was not announced, a visit by members of the Russian Federation to Congress would be the first in nearly three years. "We will continue our conversation with our American counterparts tomorrow on these and other most likely regional issues of the worldwide agenda", Slutsky said, according to Russian state media.

The Kentucky Republican said it was agreed that a delegation of council members would visit the US capital.

And Paul is the only Republican lawmaker to stand by Trump during that controversy.

Sen. Rand Paul said on Monday that American and Russian lawmakers need closer contact, noting that "our biggest problem right now is no dialogue".

The Kentucky senator has been an outspoken proponent for engagement with Moscow who voiced support for Donald Trump's decision to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki last month. Republicans spoke to their foreign counterparts in July, ahead of the Helsinki summit, to discuss several issues including Russian meddling in USA elections. Trump later walked back the remark and said he trusted the US intelligence community's assessment Moscow did interfere.

Paul suggested he did not believe raising the issue of election interference would have been productive in his meetings with Russian officials.

Trump has invited Putin to the White House, a move largely panned by lawmakers on Capitol Hill.
