Wake Forest Assistant Basketball Coach Jamill Jones Charged With Assaulting Man Who Later Died

A college basketball coach who police say threw a punch that killed a New York City tourist has pleaded not guilty to an assault charge.

Jones turned himself over to police on Thursday and has since faced court charged with assault.

Jones is accused of punching 35-year-old, Sandor Szabo, who is from Florida, and was in NY for a wedding in Long Island. Szabo was on life support through Monday but died Tuesday.

Szabo was allegedly drunk and pounding on cars early Sunday morning before he was knocked out by Jones, law enforcement sources said. Jones then got out and punched him in the face before fleeing the scene.

Wake Forest University tweeted a statement Thursday, saying, "We have just been made aware of this matter and we are gathering information". The SUV's driver stepped out and, "following a confrontation", punched Szabo, who fell back and hit his head on the concrete sidewalk, according to police.

"It's an unfortunate and tragic incident", Jones' attorney, Alain Massena, told ESPN.

Szabo, a 35-year-old man from Boca Raton, Fla., was in town for a wedding. The investigation is ongoing. Jones started his coaching career as an assistant coach with the Team Takeover AAU program after graduating from Arkansas Tech in 2008.

Jones joined the Wake Forest basketball program in May 2017, according to the team's website.

Szabo, also 35, was "super outgoing, friendly, and an incredibly smart businessman", said his company, at What If Media Group, based in Fort Lee, New Jersey.

"He was always upbeat, positive, kind and caring", the post read.

"His lovely spirit and his love of life will remain with us", the company said in the Facebook post.
