That's about 220 miles from Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, where Florence made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane at 7:15 a.m. September 14, coming ashore along a mostly boarded-up, emptied-out stretch of coastline.

SC recorded its first death from the storm, with officials saying a 61-year-old woman was killed when her auto hit a tree that had fallen across a highway.

Rescue crews used boats to carry more than 360 people from rising water in the river town of New Bern, North Carolina, while many of their neighbours awaited help.

Forecasters warned that drenching rains of 30 centimetres to 1 metre as the hurricane-turned-tropical storm crawls westward across North and SC could trigger epic flooding well inland over the next few days.

Life-threatening, catastrophic flash floods and prolonged significant river flooding are possible in portions of North Carolina, South Carolina and the southern to central Appalachias to western North Carolina to west-central Virginia and far-eastern West Virginia into early next week, the National Weather Service said. The Little River, the Cape Fear, the Lumber, the Neuse, the Waccamaw and the Pee Dee were all projected to overrun their banks, possibly flooding cities and towns.

The storm has already dumped up to 15 inches more on the Carolinas this morning.

Wind speeds are kicking up far from the coast in central SC as Hurricane Florence slowly makes its way along the coast.

Florence made landfall on the East Coast Friday morning with wind speeds of 195 miles per hour.

Officials warned that the flooding was only just starting.

With tropical storm-force winds swirling 350 miles wide, Florence continued deluging the Carolinas on Saturday morning after pushing surging seas far ashore.

Coastal Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds will likely become bottlenecks, filling with runoff faster than they can drain into the ocean, he said.

In Lenoir County, North Carolina a person died while plugging in a generator. The Army Corps of Engineers was preparing to start work restoring power, installing temporary roofing and removing debris.

Almost half a million people were evacuated from seven cities in Guangdong province, the gambling enclave of Macau closed down casinos for the first time and the Hong Kong Observatory told people to stay away from the Victoria Harbour, where storm surges battered the waterfront reinforced with sandbags.

Straddling the famous Pacific Ring of Fire, the Philippines is also bedeviled by volcanoes and earthquakes, and while there are considerable patches of poverty in North and SC, it is not the same as the rural area where Mangkhut hit.

A mother and baby died when a tree crashed into their home, the Wilmington Police Department saidon TwitterFriday afternoon.

Boats are stacked up on each other in a marina as a result from Florence in New Bern, North Carolina. So it's 'time to go out and have a drink'.

The military is providing assistance to flood ravaged SC.

"The storm is wreaking havoc on our state, and we're deeply concerned for farms, for businesses, for schools and even for whole communities that might be wiped away", North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said.

"If it goes up to my front step, I have to get out", Quinton Washington said.

"WE ARE COMING TO GET YOU", the city tweeted around 2am.
