Bob Woodward tells Stephen Colbert what shocked him most about Trump

Journalist Bob Woodward appeared on the Today show on Monday to discuss his new book on the Trump White House

US President Donald Trump has described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a friend, who told him that the US did not get anything out of Afghanistan, according to a new book written by senior journalist Bob Woodward.

Cohn stars in one of the most memorable passages in Woodward's book, "Fear", when he reportedly snatched papers off President Donald Trump's desk when the President wasn't looking to prevent him from pulling out of NAFTA and a trade deal with South Korea.

Based on several anonymous White House sources, Woodward's book provides insight into the White House's dysfunctional attempts to effect policy, and the transgender military ban is no exception.

Throughout the interview, after accusing Trump of waging a "war on the truth", Woodward brought up anecdote after anecdote (all of them second-hand from anonymous sources) to paint a picture of an out-of-touch, almost insane commander-in-chief who is "detached from reality".

Trump attacked the book again on Monday, writing in a tweet that it was a "joke".

Like the rest of the establishment media, as we head into the midterms, Woodward seems desperate to keep everyone's eye off of the results of Trump's management style, which have been an unqualified success.

The Trump administration has been on an offensive in recent weeks, seeking to discredit Woodward and the contents of his book.

"It's frankly, I think, sad and pathetic that a gutless anonymous source could receive so much attention from the media", Sanders said of the New York Times piece.

He questioned whether Woodward was "a Dem operative" and said that the "book has already been refuted and discredited by General (Secretary of Defense) James Mattis and General (Chief of Staff) John Kelly".

"If I did I would not have been elected president".

The book on the Trump presidency, "Fear", made a grand entrance and the astounding revelations in it, paint a picture of a chaotic White House, with aides at their wit's end with the commander-in-chief.

In early 2018, Trump sent several belligerent tweets that seemed created to taunt North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. "I mean, over the years, I wasn't going to people's homes without an appointment", knocking on the door and asking them to talk.

Infuriated by the unsigned missive, Trump on Friday urged Sessions to launch an investigation to uncover the author's identity, citing "national security" concerns. "That's just the Washington denial machine", he said Monday, a familiar formula created to protect their jobs and preserve their relations with their boss. "I don't even know why any of us are here. And I think we can break history", he said.

In response, Pulitzer Prize-winning Mr Woodward, who along with Carl Bernstein exposed the Watergate scandal in the 1970s, said Mr Mattis and Mr Kelly "are not telling the truth" when denying they made the remarks and "these are political statements to protect their jobs".

The White House has described "Fear" as "nothing more than fabricated stories".

"People who are well respected in this administration have come out and denied it", he commented.
