Britain warns will not pay Brexit cash if no European Union deal

A new passport and worldwide driving permit could be among the unwanted shopping list facing the British in the event of a "no deal" Brexit, the United Kingdom government admitted on Thursday (13 September).

The British Chambers of Commerce welcomed the notices as providing more clarity but said businesses needed more precision from government in order to plan for a no-deal Brexit.

And the government is proposing to cap any data charges at £45 a month.

He said: "No, I can't give a cast-iron guarantee".

The DUP's Brexit spokesperson has accused Sinn Fein MEP Martina Anderson of "whinging" about government warnings over the possible need for global driving permits in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

The UK also faces being shut out of the Galileo satellite programme, its ships being forced to provide security information before docking, and requiring new vehicle safety certificates under a "no deal" scenario.

He said: "The government has made it quite clear that, as part of its preparation for a no-deal Brexit - if that's what happens - to ensure that driving licences issued in the United Kingdom can be used outside the United Kingdom, it has applied for United Kingdom driving licences to be treated as worldwide driving licenses as well".

"With the clock ticking, ministers should drop the irresponsible rhetoric and start putting jobs and the economy first".

If EVs sold in Britain are not counted as part of EU targets, suggest the documents, this could force manufacturers to shift sales to other European countries. However, the government said it would legislate to make operators set a cap of £45 a month on data usage while overseas - roughly the same as the EU's current cap of €50.

Mr Raab told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "We've had some good news from businesses like Vodafone and Three".

Alongside the divorce deal will come a political statement on plans for a future trade deal, but there are important differences between London and Brussels on both issues.

Ever since the shock 2016 Brexit vote, major companies have been planning for Brexit, but chief executives say the scale of disruption from a disorderly Brexit is such that it is hard to prepare for.

"We offered this before the European Union regs changed and we'll be offering it free - deal or no deal", Three UK wrote on Twitter, while Vodafone UK said it had "no plans" to increase charges.
