George Papadopoulos says Jeff Sessions 'quite enthusiastic' about Trump-Putin summit

A Justice Department spokeswoman declined to comment.

George Papadopoulos, who was sentenced to two weeks in prison Friday for lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, said Sunday that his "recollection differs" from that of Attorney General Jeff Sessions regarding a key campaign-era meeting.

"I didn't plead guilty to collusion, I've pled guilty to lying", Papadopoulos, the former Trump campaign adviser, told Sean Hannity Tuesday night. In court papers, Breen wrote that during a March 2016 meeting attended by Papadopoulos, Trump nodded with approval at the idea, and then-Senator Jeff Sessions "appeared to like" it and said the campaign "should look into it". "And my understanding is he can't remember whether he turned that information over to other senior people in the Trump campaign".

At that meeting, the Maltese professor, who had ties to Russia, told Papadopoulos the Russians had obtained a number of Hillary Clinton's emails. The pair sat just two seats apart, photographs revealed.

Mr. Papadopoulos said Sunday he had no recollection of sending an email about the possible dirt to John Mashburn, a Trump campaign and White House official who has reportedly testified to congressional investigators he thought he got such an alert about possible Clinton dirt from Mr. Papadopoulos.

"I have been asked this a million times, and here's the reality", Papadopoulos said.

Chuck Cooper, Sessions' private lawyer, said in a statement that "Attorney General Sessions has publicly testified under oath about his recollection of this meeting, and he stands by his testimony".

He said that shortly before he started with the campaign he took a business trip to Rome arranged by his then-employer.

"I have never heard of him before in my life", he said of the time he met Misfud.

Democrats have remained mum about the new account contradicting Sessions' testimony, itself a sign of how unusual his tenure has been.

Papadopoulos, the first campaign aide sentenced in special counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing investigation, acknowledged that his actions hindered an investigation of national importance, a move that the judge in his case said resulted in the 31-year-old putting his own self-interest above that of his country.

Trump has made plain his displeasure with Sessions and has signaled that he could fire him after the midterm elections.

The special counsel's view of Papadopoulos is that his "lies negatively affected the FBI's Russian Federation investigation" and his "lies were not momentarily lapses", a government filing said. "Jeff Sessions, who I remember being quite enthusiastic". Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said recently that he expected the attorney general to be fired "sooner rather than later", and that Trump was entitled to make such a move.
