Hurricane Florence: Warnings of life-threatening surge

President Trump listens Tuesday during a briefing in the Oval Office on Hurricane Florence. He said"We are absolutely totally prepared for the storm

The storm is set to bring heavy rains and damaging winds, particularly in areas along the Atlantic coast, and will be the most intense during the overnight hours of September 14.

The Carolinas could begin to feel Hurricane Florence's fury as early as Wednesday night, according to the National Hurricane Center.

"Interests elsewhere in the southeastern and mid-Atlantic states should monitor the progress of Florence". In line with that order, Boeing will suspend operations at Boeing South Carolina today so our employees can properly evacuate.

Should the storm stall, heavy rain dumped on North Carolina for days on end will wash into rivers that eventually flow into SC.

The eye of the storm was about 360 miles south-southwest of Bermuda and 785 miles east-southeast of Cape Fear, N.C. It was moving west-northwest at 17 mph and recorded maximum sustained winds of 140 mph, the NHC said in its 5 p.m. EDT advisory. It is now located 950 miles east-southeast of Cape Fear.

Hurricane Florence is still a category 4 hurricane. Fallen trees and power poles will isolate residential areas. "[They were] days and weeks after the storm because the floodwater lingered". Widespread rainfall totals of 15 to 20 inches were recorded, with more than 25 inches in some areas, mainly in the Charleston tri-county area.

Donald Trump declared on Tuesday that his government is "absolutely, totally prepared" for Hurricane Florence, even as officials and forecasters warned that the "staggering" storm is shaping up to be catastrophic and unprecedented.

The Atlantic Ocean has seen its fair share of strong storms - 2017's Hurricane Irma reached a maximum sustained wind speed of 185 miles per hour, making it the strongest storm outside the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico.

If a Category 5 hits the southeastern USA, "a high percentage of framed homes will be destroyed, with total roof failure and wall collapse", said the NHC.

It's not just North Carolina that is "taking Hurricane Florence seriously", either, in SC and Virginia residents have also declared states of emergency following the updates on the storm.

Evacuation orders have also been issued.

"Florence is going to drop tremendous amount of rain, not as much as [Hurricane] Harvey brought to Texas but there will nearly definitely be flooding", Salna says.

Speaking in the Oval Office alongside Trump, FEMA administrator Brock Long said Florence may be a "very devastating storm".

Hurricane Carla hit Texas as a category 4 storm in 1961, causing $2.36 billion worth of damage.

But the landfall intensity of that storm was 250 km/h when it hit Puerto Rico, it added. Lanes will be reversed on several highways in the state.

Its expected sluggishness is becoming more common, possibly a result of climate change, said National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration climate scientist and hurricane expert Jim Kossin.
