Limiting children’s screen time linked to better cognition, study says

Scientists and educators have grown increasingly concerned that constant use of mobile phones from an early age may lead to problems

Just one in 20 children in the study met the full daily guidelines of nine to 11 hours of sleep, one hour of physical activity and limited screen time.

Using screen devices for fun activities such as playing games or watching videos was referred to as recreational screen use.

Canadian researchers from Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario evaluated more than 4,500 children for a period of 10 years on how screen time, physical activity and sleep affected their mental functions - called global cognition - and is measured by memory, attention, processing speed and language.

When examined on the basis of individual recommendations, less than two hours of recreational screen time in a day was linked to the most beneficial effect on cognition.

Researchers discovered, by analysing USA children's data for eight to 11-year-old, the more of the recommendations a child fulfilled, the better their cognition.

The study took data from the National Institutes of Health-funded Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study and included surveys done by parents about the amount of sleep a child got, how often they were physically active and how much screen time they had.

"We know that the behaviors of physical activity, sleep and screen time can independently impact the cognitive health of a child".

Nearly one in three children (29% - 1,330/4,520) met none of the guidelines, 41% (1,845/4,520) met only one, 25% (1,129/4,520) met two, and 5% (216/4,520) met all three recommendations.

The researchers found that only 5 percent of children met all three recommendations.

The study was conducted by Canadian researchers, but examined children in the US using the Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Children and Youth.

Writing in a linked comment, Dr Eduardo Esteban Bustamante, University of IL, said: "Each minute spent on screens necessarily displaces a minute from sleep or cognitively challenging activities". While those with excess screen time scored lower on cognitive tests, this does not necessarily mean TVs and smartphones are the direct cause: it could be that more cognitively-capable children are less likely to spend time on screens, Science News reports. "In the case of evening screen use, this displacement may also be compounded by impairment of sleep quality", he said.

"Based on our findings, pediatricians, parents, educators, and policymakers should promote limiting recreation screen time and prioritizing healthy sleep routines during childhood and adolescence", Jeremy Walsh, the study's lead author, told The Guardian. Google has also introduced new features to limit screen time and monitor use on Android devices.
