Loftus-Cheek, who has become the canary in the mine for England's youth development pathway, had played only 33 minutes for Chelsea this season prior to kickoff, while Delph was making his first appearance of the campaign.

Southgate insisted after being outplayed for the majority of a 2-1 defeat by Spain in his side's inaugural Nations League encounter on Saturday that England must persist with his intention to improve on playing out from the back under pressure.

Marcus Rashford's back-to-back goals for England are a just reward for the player's excellent mentality, according to manager Gareth Southgate. "Harry falls in the category in which we have several players where we have to watch how much they play". There was definitely a lot of room for improvement.

"I thought this is a good opportunity to do it", Southgate said on Monday. "The gaffer had a stern word with us and in the second half it was much better". "Everybody has got to play a part in that but the clubs own the player and they have got to do the right thing for themselves".

"Before I got in the players were trying to sort things out", he continued.

"We expect that, we encourage it". We want to have an environment that's demanding because that's the only way we can keep raising the standards. We also know that, on Saturday against Spain, we could have feasibly ended with a draw which would have looked different as well.

He started all but one of England's games at the World Cup and is arguably the first name on the team sheet at his club.

"He's not had enough break now since 2015 and I do remember a similar situation with myself accumulating from '96, through the tournament, '97, '98 the World Cup in France, in '99 I blew up and in 2000 I was finished".
