Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has opened the door for former captain John Terry to return to Stamford Bridge as part of his coaching staff.

Terry is now without a club having left Aston Villa at the end of the 2017-2018 Championship campaign after Steve Bruce's side were beaten in the play-off final by Fulham in May.

Maurizio Sarri has said he has been warning his Chelsea players all week about the danger of dropping points after global breaks as they prepare to resume their Premier League campaign at home to Cardiff City on Saturday.

"I don't know now the situation".

Speaking in an interview with BBC Sport, Lawrenson said: "Like Liverpool and Watford, Chelsea have got a 100 per cent record from their first four league games and I see that ideal start continuing here".

Chelsea have lost just one of their last 51 home Premier League games against newly-promoted opposition (W42 D8 L1), with that defeat coming against Bournemouth in December 2015. "He told me a lot of things, that he wants to play, so I'd have to speak to him again". So I know that the matches after the break are very, very hard. For sure, he would be a point of reference for me.

"It's up to him".

"I think in the coaching staff, I think".

Chelsea's ideal start to the season has led to suggestions they can challenge for the title after finishing fifth last term, well adrift of champions Manchester City.

'The two teams to watch this year are Manchester City and Liverpool, ' he added.

"We need another step, I think, to be the same level".

Sarri went on to say whilst he is certainly hoping to be proven wrong, he thinks the likelihood of his side closing the gap on City is highly unlikely and that his aim is simply to improve his side, rather than chase the title. "The gap was 30 points at the beginning of the season.to cover 30 points in only one season is very hard".
