Some of the people quoted in Fear deny saying the things attributed to them, Colbert told Woodward, mentioning Defense Secretary James Mattis, White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, and former Trump lawyer John Dowd.

When Colbert brought up the fact that some people in the Trump administration were portrayed as types of heroes, Woodward replied, "You get to know these people, and you realize they're speaking from conscience, because they are anxious about Trump doing things".

At the meeting, Trump reportedly began to complain about "all this money we're spending on U.S. forces overseas", and Mattis had to explain why it was necessary.

By the looks of it, Woodward has plenty of grave, highly specific details to offer readers about the threat posed by the Trump White House, not just to its staffers but to everyone living under its rule.

The book is number 8 on Amazon's Top 20 most sold and most read books of the week and Fear is already the sixth biggest seller of 2018 on Amazon, CNN reported. "He's called this 'fraudulent, '" Guthrie said to Woodward. "I'm putting money in my campaign and you're f***ing stealing from me".

"In the Central Intelligence Agency, they tell people to 'let the silence suck out the truth, ' so, just be quiet and and people want to talk", he added.

"Well, I don't know", Woodward told Dana Perino during her show, The Daily Briefing, on Wednesday after she told him several sources told her the book has caused mistrust between the president and the retired United States Marine Corps general. "We don't take it like others - like China", Trump is quoted as saying in the book, during the July 19 situation room meeting.

"This has not been treated seriously enough", Woodward said on "Today".

In a morning tweet, Trump leveled his latest criticism against a forthcoming book by veteran journalist Bob Woodward, calling it "just another assault against me, in a barrage of assaults" and branding it "fiction".

"These people, these are political statements to protect their jobs, totally understandable", he said.

For instance, Woodward writes in Fear, Trump wanted to withdraw from a key trade agreement with South Korea in September 2017. Dems can't stand losing. "It's a way to say you're important to this story, I take you seriously". Trump himself has shown little willingness to let Woodward's claims go by the wayside, tweeting the famed Watergate journalist "is a liar who is like a Dem operative prior to the midterms".

Still, Woodward's book has fed talk that Trump could seek to replace Kelly and Mattis.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning Woodward staunchly defended the integrity of his reporting and said the book, which comes out this week, "is as carefully done as you can do an excavation of the reality of what goes on".
