School principal faces backlash after condemning Nike Kaepernick campaign on private Facebook page

A billboard featuring former San Francisco 49ers quaterback Colin Kaepernick is displayed on the roof of the Nike Store on September 5, 2018 in San Francisco, California. This comes as some others denounce Nike's move, including a Louisiana mayor who last week banned the purchase of Nike products at city booster clubs.

Nike first ran its Kaepernick ad on a Monday and Edison Trends said that the companies sales surged 31 percent from Sunday through Tuesday of that same week. "It's a calculated risk, but one that our data shows has had a positive impact so far in terms of online sales".

But for now at least, despite the initial drop and President Donald Trump's tweeting "What was Nike thinking?" The Kaepernick ad could become the company's most-liked Instagram post, drawing a record number of comments, although many of those remarks were critical of the company.

The move drew both intense praise and disgust from critics and supporters of Kaepernick, who took a knee during the playing of the national anthem before an NFL game nearly two years ago in protest of police brutality in America.

"Just like the National Football League, whose ratings have gone WAY DOWN, Nike is getting absolutely killed with anger and boycotts", the president tweeted shortly after the announcement of the deal. I wonder if they had any idea that it would be this way? Nike's stock fell more than 3 percent to less than $80 per share in the hours after the announcement, though it recovered those initial losses by the end of last week. Though Kaepernick originally meant to sit down while the national anthem played before an NFL game, it was a military veteran who advised him to kneel, saying it was more effective. ESPN reports that 25 percent of respondents viewed the NFL's handling of players' social justice protests in a positive light, while 30 percent of respondents approved of Trump's response.

Republican voters do not support the right to protest 60-39 percent, the only listed party, gender, education, age or racial group opposed to this right. Live interviewers call landlines and cell phones. SSRS surveyed 1,008 adults nationwide, with a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points.
