Novak Djokovic leads US Open final: LIVE updates as Djokovic battles Juan Martin del Potro

"Amazing" is a flawless word for this trio, which is rightfully back atop the rankings for the first time in 3½ years, with Nadal at No. 1, Federer at No. 2 and, as of Monday, Djokovic at No. 3.

The winners of the Grand Slam women's singles titles this year were all different players.

Djokovic has appeared to be nearing top form in the second half of the year, and only Roger Federer (20) and Rafael Nadal (17) have won more majors than the 31-year-old.

Novak Djokovic sent an emotional message to the American Pete Sampras during the US Open final prize ceremony on Sunday after beating Juan Martin del Potro.

When the ATP rankings are updated on Tuesday, Nadal, Federer and Djokovic will be in the Top 3 for the first time since April 2015, when Djokovic was No.1 ahead of Federer and Nadal.

The Serb walloped a forehand volley to safety on his first match point, dropping to the floor and spreading out on his back with his arms and legs outstretched in celebration. He's healthy. He has a great team working with him. "Of course I'm sad because I lose but I'm happy for Novak, you deserved to win", del Potro said.

"It is not easy to speak right now", Del Potro said on court.

And yet, after the events that unfolded in Saturday's women's final at Flushing Meadow, no one - not the players, the officials, administrators, the fans or the sport itself - emerged as a victor.

Just like last night's women's singles final, the match was played under closed roof with rain in NY. He is the only man to achieve the career grand slam in both singles and doubles.

That seemed to take some of the fight out of the Argentine who went down 7-4 in the eventual tiebreak.

For Djokovic, he got better as the tournament progressed.

But the twist of the tale happened when leading 4-3, Djokovic broke Del Potro yet again to enforce a third break in the third set and set up the match on his serve.

In a nice gesture, Djokovic consoled del Potro moments after he was seen weeping in his chair.

While the 6-6 del Potro relied on his long strides, the 6-2 Djokovic over and over demonstrated a sort of gymnastic telepathy - all agility and anticipation.

Even at Wimbledon this year, he criticized some Centre Court fans for lacking respect toward him while schedulers exiled him to Court Two for his third round match.

Del Potro held at love and had chances for another break on his next opportunity before Djokovic finally held to end a 22-point game that lasted more than 20 minutes.

That inspired me to start playing tennis.

"Novak has everything to make records in this sport".

He put out his best tennis for the Arthur Ashe Stadium, countered some of Del Potro's best play and shone at Flushing Meadows for the third time in his career.

"Novak is too fast". He depended on his hometown friends, a group of whom have been in NY throughout the fortnight to lead cheers in Arthur Ashe Stadium, and worked his way back to the final at his favorite ATP Tour event.

"When the roof is closed, trust me, it's very, very loud down there".

At times it resembled a football match rather than a tennis match. "It will be in my heart for the rest of my life", Del Potro said.

Djokovic's strength lay in his returns.

Djokovic was far superior to del Potro in the opening set but he dropped three consecutive games in the second to trail 4-3.
