Oculus announces Quest, its $399 high-end standalone headset

At Oculus Connect 5 (OC5), the new all-in-one Oculus Quest headset debuted with the advertising copy: "This is the VR experience everyone's been waiting for".

The work that's been done to the Oculus platform over the past year with Home and Dash updates was reiterated, and this work is now available to everyone without the need for opting into the Beta program. As we previously reported, the device will ship with Touch Controllers like the ones found on the Oculus Rift, and it features all of the necessary sensors in the headset itself, completely ditching the need for cables (aside from charging, of course).

While some call virtual reality the future of gaming, computing, and so much more, the only way to get the most premium experience is by having the VR headset wired to a computer.

Zuckerberg said the Oculus Quest will launch next spring with 50-plus titles-included a Star Wars-related game that focuses on Darth Vader-and offer "Rift-quality experiences".

New features are being added, including hundreds of new items and decor to use in your Home.

The Quest supports inside-out tracking, hand presence, and 6 degrees of freedom, all in a singular package. Avatars are being worked on, and later this year it's expected we'll see expressive avatars that have enhanced eye and mouth movements.

The Quest looks slightly different than the Santa Cruz, coming with a more curved design than either the Go or Rift.

What that means is new updates for both Home and Dash, with Home getting even more customisation options to personalise your own digital pad.

Zuckerberg says the Quest is the final piece of the product puzzle for Oculus.

The advent of wireless VR with higher performance and better visuals is an easy "gimme", except for the overall level of sustainable graphics performance and the inevitable impact on visuals and battery life.

But what's unclear is whether enterprise developers will be looking at Oculus headsets for corporate use cases.
