Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona calls Kavanaugh decision 'a tough call'

Handwritten note on Kavanaugh, Ford hearing room table: 'Good luck, Dr. Ford'

"The Kavanaugh nomination process has been flawed from the beginning", he said, adding that Ford was credible and courageous.

"While some may argue that a different standard should apply regarding the Senate's advice and consent responsibilities, I believe that the constitution's provisions of fairness and due process apply here as well", Flake said. "I feel like this was mishandled from the Democrats from the beginning who could have been asking Judge Kavanaugh and Dr. Ford questions in a much less public setting", Conway said. Kavanaugh denies all the allegations against him.

The testimony of Christine Blasey Ford before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday is quickly generating commentary from across the political spectrum as a sympathetic, believable account.

The ABA letter does not say this explicitly, but we all know what a full FBI investigation really means: a serious effort to interview Mark Judge, the man whom Ford claims was Kavanaugh's accomplice to sexual assault.

She told the committee she feared Kavanaugh would rape and accidentally kill her during the alleged assault.

The 11 Republicans and 10 Democrats on the committee will decide whether to recommend Kavanaugh for approval by the entire Senate, which is expected to begin procedural votes Saturday.

America in July had endorsed Kavanaugh on the grounds that he might have provided the Supreme Court with the vote needed to overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that legalized abortion nationwide.

"That refers to flatulence", Mr Kavanaugh told the hearing to some muffled laughter. "She gave good testimony".

Two key undecided Republican votes remain: Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski, and Maine Senator Susan Collins.

The remarkable testimony appears to have only sharpened the partisan divide over Donald Trump's nominee.

Ford said that was the case with her alleged attack. Richard Blumenthal of CT made a similar comment, saying that "someone who is honest is also candid about what he or she can not remember". "His testimony was powerful, honest, and riveting", Trump tweeted. While, he said, it took courage for Ford to testify, there was no evidence to corroborate her allegations.

As part of its review of the judge's qualifications, the ABA's Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary found that Kavanaugh "enjoys an excellent reputation for integrity and is a person of outstanding character".

The incident allegedly happened at a gathering of teenagers at a house, when Judge Kavanaugh and his friend were both drunk.

America, the nation's only weekly Catholic news magazine, has published an editorial pulling its endorsement for Brett Kavanaugh following Thursday's hearings.

"If Senate Republicans proceed with his nomination, they will be prioritizing policy aims over a woman's report of an assault", the America magazine editors wrote.
