Trump warns of tariffs on another $267 billion of Chinese imports

Trump upped the ante again on Friday as he warned he was ready to slap tariffs on almost all Chinese imports to the United States, threatening duties on another US$267 billion of goods on top of US$200 billion in imports primed for levies in coming days.

"China, right now, is a far bigger problem", Trump said.

The administration has already imposed 25% tariffs on $50 billion worth of Chinese goods.

"The $200 billion we're talking about could happen very soon", Trump said.

"We will evaluate the comments and we will make a decision", Kudlow said, suggesting it could be some time before the fresh import charges will be levied.

"If the U.S. dogmatically implements any new tariff measures against China, China will have to take the necessary countermeasures", commerce spokesman Gao Feng told reporters.

"Our concern with these tariffs is that the USA will be hardest hit, and that will result in lower US growth and competitiveness and higher prices for US consumers", Apple said in its letter.

"More broadly, tariffs will lead to higher USA consumer prices, lower overall US economic growth, and other unintended economic consequences". The administration has asserted that Trump's tariffs would force China to trade on more favorable terms with the United States.

The US Trade Representative's office received almost 6,000 comments and held seven days of public hearings on the proposed levies. Comparatively few applauded the tariffs.

Retailers had successfully kept high-profile consumer electronics such as cell phones and television sets off of previous tariff lists.

In short, the White House is mulling slapping tariffs on $200bn of Chinese kit imported into the States - and the Command-in-Chief is suggesting ballooning that figure to $467bn.

White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow just hours before said talks with Beijing were continuing to try to defuse the conflict, and that he was hopeful that a solution could be found. And China has vowed to hit $60bn in United States products in retaliation.

"If [China] wants to continue that kind of model which is based on intellectual property theft, how does it back away from that because that's where a lot of its growth comes from", he said.

Levying duties on all Chinese purchases would hit "every aspect of our American lifestyle - so the clothes that we put on our back, the food that we eat, the cars that we drive, theshoes that we wear", Hun Quach, vice president of global trade for the Retail Industry Leaders Association, said by phone. "However, hope springs eternal".
