But today, Phillips at least gave us a glimpse into this enigmatic film, releasing the first look at Joaquin Phoenix as, presumably, the man who will become the Clown Prince of Crime.

The Joker is now filming in New York City and director Todd Phillips has made a decision to give us the first official look at Joaquin Phoenix in character.

You can check out the first official image of Joaquin Phoenix in Joker below, thanks to Todd Phillips' Instagram account, as well as some other leaked photos from the set.

The importance of Thomas Wayne in the story appeared to be confirmed in August, when Alec Baldwin was reportedly cast in the role. As Joker himself says in Alan Moore and Brian Bolland's The Killing Joke (which this movie may take some inspiration from), "If I'm going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice!"

The star has been lined up by Warner Brothers to play the iconic Batman villain, for a Joker origin movie. It has been reported that the film will be inspired by Scorsese's The King of Comedy and Taxi Driver. While we know Deadpool 2's Zazie Beetz, Oscar award-winning actor Robert De Niro, and GLOW co-star Marc Maron are in the film-but we have no clue as to who they're playing from the vast Batman lore.

Early rumors indicate Phoenix's Arthur and Joker will be a stand-up comedian. So, it will be interesting to see how comic book fans react to what Todd Phillips and Phoenix are creating together.

Joker is now filming in New York City, and it is expected to hit theaters on October 4, 2019.
