Lady Gaga co-writes new op-ed about suicide and mental health

The focus of this year's mental health day is on children and adolescents especially within the war-torn areas.

To mark World Mental Health Day on Wednesday, she will also pledge a return to her fight to tackle "burning injustices" and hand the Samaritans £1.8m to remain a free 24-hour service for four years. "Even when treatment is sought, its quality is poor - the World Mental Health Surveys reported that one in five people with depressive disorder received minimally adequate treatment in high-income countries, dropping to just one in 27 in LMICs (low and middle income countries)", the report said. "No one should be afraid to go for a mental health check-up or a mental health professional".

Unlike costly physical illnesses like cancer, where expenses are largely hospital-based, mental health costs are often indirect, such as not being able to work.

'But we need to do more to challenge the stigma that people with mental ill-health face and make sure they feel they can reach out for help.

The Lancet report found that in many countries, people with common mental disorders such as depression, anxiety and schizophrenia routinely suffer gross human rights violations - including shackling, torture and imprisonment. More shockingly, 60% of respondents believed that people with mental illness "should have their own groups to avoid contaminating healthy people" and 68% believe that they "should not be given any responsibility".

WHO, in its recommendations, called for the integration of mental health into primary healthcare.

The harmful use of alcohol and illicit drugs among adolescents were also identified as contributing to risky behaviours such as violence, unsafe sex and dangerous driving. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds.

"As a government, we have delineated our health system for easy appreciation of the roles required by all stakeholders in the sector". Without factoring in suicide, mental health issues are projected to reduce economic growth in both India and China by more than $9 trillion respectively between 2016 and 2030.

'As we watch the news, scroll the internet and talk to family and friends around the world, it's apparent that instability, violence and constant traumatic events are becoming daily occurrences, ' said WFMH president Professor Alberto Trimboli.
