A child in Florida has become the first person to die of the flu this season, according to state health officials.

Vaccinations have been shown to reduce a child's likelihood of dying from the flu by 60 percent, health department officials said.

Free flu shots to uninsured adults age 19 and older and to children age 18 and younger with CHIP, Medicaid, Amerigroup, United Healthcare or Sunflower are available at the Division of Health clinic at 2716 W. Central, the release said. "And because we as health care providers have no idea of knowing who is going to get very sick from the flu, that's why we tell everyone to get the shot to protect themselves and their families".

The study, co-authored by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), found pregnant women who received the flu shot reduced their risk of being hospitalized due to the virus by "an average of 40 percent". And what's even more concerning, 30 percent of parents believe that vaccines are a conspiracy, and 28 percent of parents believe the flu vaccine can cause autism.

"The flu vaccine is the best protection against the flu", said Dr. Moorjani.

Last season, 336 people in IN died from flu complications. The child was otherwise healthy, with no known underlying medical conditions. One was an unspecific strain and the other was strep throat.

The first Florida flu death of the season has been reported. It was the disease's highest death toll in at least four decades. "The flu shot is the safest way to prevent the spread of the flu and the best way to protect loved ones". Still, she said, "it's a good time for people to go out and get vaccinated so they're prepared for this season".

Anti-virals like Tamiflu are effective in lessening the symptoms of the flu but are most effective if administered within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms.

Signs of the flu include fever that lasts 3-4 days, body aches, chills, tiredness, cough, and headache.
